• Born in Oume, he left the Ivory Coast for the Netherlands in 2003 having shown his potential as a teenager with Abidjan.
• Joined Feyenoord, where his elder brother, Bonaventure, had been a key player for several seasons, but had a loan spell at nursery club Excelsior before a breakthrough 2004/05 campaign, in which he scored 20 Eredivisie goals for Feyenoord plus another four in the UEFA Cup.
• A petition for Dutch citizenship was led by then national team coach Marco van Basten, who hoped to include him in the Oranje's 2006 FIFA World Cup squad, but the application was declined. He eventually made his international debut for the Ivory Coast in February 2007 − against Guinea − going on to appear for Les Éléphants at the 2008 and 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, Beijing Olympics and 2010 FIFA World Cup.
• Scored 15 Eredivisie goals in his second and last season for Feyenoord before he joined Chelsea in May 2006 as a replacement for Eidur Gudjohnsen; less prolific in England but managed at least six Premier League goals in each of his first three seasons despite often being used from the bench.
• A substitute in Chelsea's 2007 League Cup and FA Cup final wins, he came on in extra time of the 2008 UEFA Champions League final defeat by Manchester United FC.
• Started the first four games of Chelsea's 2009/10 European campaign, scoring twice in a 4-0 home win against Club Atlético de Madrid. Also struck five league goals, including a hat-trick in a 7-0 defeat of Stoke City FC, as Chelsea secured the domestic double for the first time.
